Um, why am I getting SO high?

So I stopped smoking pot when I was about 20, (and subsequently started drinking and screwed up my life for a while, go figure...), but recently when i was finally convinced that EVERYTHING I was told about pot was a lie, and decided not ot wait for 'permission' and started smoking again occasionally.
So i got a trusted friend to get me some. He said that he usually gets stuff that is a 9 out of 10 in potency, and this was about that potency. Got it home and smoked some slowly since I heard high potency meant something different than it did in 1989, so I took one hit and sat... Took another and sat... then took a third and was done. And I was GOOD and high. Like chuckling to myself and couldn't tell how loud the music was, kinda high.
So of course I thought that eventually I'd get a little bit of 'tolerance' back to it, but even after several months, smoking just a few times a month, I still just get REALLY high off just a few hits. I usually just do two, maybe three, and call it a day. I've even grown a little that I screwed up totally but got to bud. It was more indica dominant and expected that to be a little milder. Still can't smoke more than two or three hits.
Now, I don't really, mind spending $100 for more than a years worth of pot, but half the fun was always smoking it and passing it around for a while... With this we just do a couple hits and done.
So what's the deal? Is it really that much more potent or have I just become a light weight in the last 25 years?
Glad to hear any opinions or thoughts. Nice to be back anyway!

I think it has alot to do with tolerance and usage. Age may have a role in it too. Of course, the less frequently you smoke, the better the 'hit' when you do decide to toke. I've noticed it too. In my college days, we'd play games or watch movies and go through alot of green. Now, I'm content and completely lit off of a few hits from a bowl. I don't mind not having to use as much to attain a satisfying high. I've also tried to push it and smoke alot more than usual in a sitting, and I've noticed that (unlike in my younger days) I'll hit a threshold where its seemingly pointless to 'waste' any more ganja, because I'm as high as I'm going to get for that session.

Tolerance most likely.
These guys are right. If you only smoke a few times a month, your tolerance will be almost at zero, which will cause 3 hits to be enough to get stoned. Even smoking one day a week won't raise your tolerance much, if at all. It's consecutive days, and even more so, multiple sessions per day, that cause a noticeable increase in tolerance.

If you're the kind of person, you could cut it with tobbacco?
If you don't want to raise your tolerance (imo a better option), just add some fan leaves to your bud. There were a ton of fan leaves in the street bud from decades ago. Poor trimming jobs just dilute the bud so you can take more hits, and get the same level of highness.

I hadnt smoked for like 10 years till last year. Ive been smoking consistently for a year and a half again and finally now after that long I can take a couple hits and go out and run errands or work etc. Before like the last month I would smoke and get paranoid that everyone was looking at me (they really were though) and just that too high feeling. I feel like it took twice as long to build upo a tolerance to it after stopping for so long.

you realize they're still looking at you, right? bongsmilie

I've never been fully convinced of the "tolerance" theories DIRECTLY. I do however believe the "placebo effect", or rather, what your own perception makes of the high, is dramatically increased the longer you go without smoking. If I stop for a few hours, or stop for a week, one rip will always have the same, minor effect on me. The more I miss, the more I appreciate.
