I Want to Build My First LED Fixture

What I'm going to do is start of with 1 fixture. It will have five or 6 cobs, the CXA3070's. Could 5 cobs be ran efficiently with one driver or would it be better to run 6 cobs on two drivers? Which driver would you use for both options to gain the highest effeciencies?

Since you are in a 5x5 i would look into the Meanwell HLG185h-c1050 driver.

http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/260/HLG-185H-C-spec-264052.pdf

its max Forward voltage out is 190v divide that by 38v per COB and you can run 5 CXA3070 nicely. I like your idea of building one to start and get the experience. Then you can build 3 or 4 more and be set. Alternatively, COBs arent cheap, buying in small quantities will cost you more. If you do commit to the cxa3070 and plan on buying a min. of 20 units, you can save 20-25% by going to Verical.com

I just picked up a 20 pack of top bin AD, 4000k for $27 ea.

So i'm currently using two Mars2 700W. Together they pull about 660w total. How many cobs would i need to pull about 600w from the wall using the CXA3070s. Im considering buying about 10 of them today. Which color spectrum and drivers should i get and how many of each. I want maximum efficiency. About how many watts and lumens should this produce? Also what size heatsinks should i get? I would prefer on massive heatsink. Can the heatsink be cooled with one big fan similar to the way Realstyles builds his panels? I will sell the two Mars2 once i complete the build.

all your questions should be answered by the picture & efficiency chart. this setup would put you at a little under 600w (660w is a typo in diagram) that you are pulling now with the MARS @ 46% eff.

If you want to bump up efficiency, run 6 cxas per bar instead of 5. and run hlg185h-c700 for 50.39% efficiency

a version is probably easier for your first build since it requires no additional parts or soldering, they can be slightly harder to find sometimes.
I just ordered enough parts to make one panel. I will start with this and then expand and make the additional two. I had to get the HLG185H-C1050B. They were out of the A models. I only spent about $330, not bad for 220W. Do you have any links for wiring the fixture

Congrats! you are well on your way. wiring is super easy. (see diag) To start you can just cap off the wires on the dimming leads if you dont care to dim the driver. just dont connect the blue and white wires together

gortcha. thanks man. you have definately made this a much easier process. i will be sure to put the pictures up when finished. i realized i shouldn't have bought the mars the day after i got them. you can build a much better fixture

I haven't used a lot of lenses, but there are applications where they can be valuable. I am going the reflector route on my 3070 new build using:

Ideal cob holder: 50-2234C http://www.newark.com/ideal/50-2303cr/led-holder-cree-cxa35-cob-array/dp/39X0077
ideal reflector holder : 50-2100AN http://www.newark.com/ideal/50-2100an/led-adaptor-ledil-reflector/dp/39X0068
and LEDIL angelina 90 deg reflectors: http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Ledil/F13838_ANGELINA-XW/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMt82OzCyDsLFOPuE06SNYbxdJgYPnMRCZ8=

the ideal reflector holder can be used with the ideal cob holder?
