Saying so long to regular beans...

Always have used feminized but lately I decided to buy regs from a US seller of some strains that looked straight up dank. Just horrible crappy luck with the past twenty I've dropped....

Johnston's Genetics Grand Daddy Purpberry: Out out of 10, 7 germed and only got two females.

Norstar Maestro: Again only 7 germed out of 10, but got 4 females this time and then two of those hermed on me. Lighting, temps, pH and ppm's all dialed in so....?

Wasted a lot of time, energy, grow medium and nutes, not to mention my space planning went to shit. Just a word of advice to anyone who wants to listen, if you feel inclined to run regs get ready to just grow mothers so you can take cuttings.

Back to feminized from here on out. It's always nice to know how much you start with is how much you'll end up with.

What does dialed in mean
Come on brotha? Meaning optimal.

It could be your germination method too. How do you germ your seeds?

I seem to have a very high ratio of females most every time I germinate seeds. Last year I popped around 120 seeds, 4 never came up and 11 were males.. the rest were female.
If you popped 120 and 116 actually germed, that would be a 96% rate.

If out of the 116 that actually germed out of 120, and if you got 105 females out of 116, that would give you a 90% success rate. So my question is, do you work for or are affiliated with Norstar and Johnston's in any way? Cuz I feel like I'm gettin knee deep in bullshit here bruh.

105 females out of 116 regs? Lol you should sell your secret germination methods my main man, you'd be rich by now

I meant what does it mean to you
My brotha, not in a college dorm on a shoe string budget, hobbying out of a cardboard box and CFL's. That is as much as I will expound on that.

There has been an influx as of late of state side seed sellers and their offerings are mostly regs, so buyer beware for people thinking about the 50/50 myth.

NGR = Not Growing Regs....for me any longer

Theres also a high percentage chance that the fems can herm out too.
Why not grow out the females and take boat loads of cuttings?
To each their own but dont swear off regs because of a couple bad experiences.

Yeah man that's the only way to salvage the situation is thru clones, but don't have the extra time or space to keep mommies going. Just trying to remind other members that rolling with regs is like rolling the dice, you just don't know what the outcome may be. And in my case, unfortunately, I wasted a lot of time, $ and energy in that process.

Huh. I'm all ears if you wanna share some pointers. You're either the luckiest cat alive or you've got a great method for germinating seeds

Lol right? Back in the late 80's when I started the hobby, beans either came from bags or friends and I enjoyed a 50/50 ratio. But now....dafuq?

Nothing wrong with regs. Something is off. There typically better odds of a seed being female than male. Just don't need many one male can pollenate many plants. Should be no reason not to see 60-90% female when popping beans.

fems are no more likely to hermie than regular seeds are... it's the parents, not the feminizing, that determines how likely a seed is to being hermie prone, but that holds true for regular seeds and feminized seeds..

I suppose that is true.
Ive had mixed results with fems.
But to each their own.
Most of the strains im interested in are only available in reg so it makes the decision easy.

There is also a chance of them being male. Not a very good chance, but I've gotten two males out of fems in the last couple of years.

I like regs more than I do fems. Good breeding projects don't happen with female only seeds. Breeding with fems can bring out the recessive traits that nobody wants in their plants.

No Sir, I don't work for anyone. I only buy beans from certain breeders and I also make my own. I've been growing pot for... shit, it'll be 34 years here in a few weeks.

My method for germinating... keep the medium or plugs you germ in warm and moist, but not wet, around 76-82F. Germinating with warmer temps gives a much higher female ratio... cooler temps gives more males, in my experience. I know it's not as extravagant as one may have thought, but it always works for me.

Some strains may take longer to germinate than others do... I have a couple of crosses that I've made that have germed in as little as 6 hours... and that's pretty good, if you ask me.

I've had great luck with norstar except one strain. Got all males. But that was a tester strain. They made it up to me. The konas they gave me I popped 5. Got 2 males 3 females. The chelumbian I popped 3 and got 3 females. Same for their evil intentions 3 for 3. Norstar has awesome genetics. They use all Oldschool strains for their males. They're on point. That Johnston whatever, I've never heard of so I can't speak on that.

I've never had a herm from regs. A few friends have. I've had herms from fems though. Those were nirvana strains and dutch passion.

Actually I had one regular herm on me. It was an old school ibl master kush (Hindu kush x Hindu kush) . It hermed 2 years later. In clone form from when I originally popped it. Ibl's eventually become unstable.
