planting the corn

what's funny is that it just dawned on me last night that i can eat everything i am growing.

i did this mainly because i like growing stuff, secondly because i like building stuff, and third to get some sweat equity out of the house.
I do it mostly to get back into shape after lazing around on the computer all winter, I too love growing stuff and it really kills me to pay $3.50 for a little thing of cherry tomatoes at the store. I love the bags of peppers and buckets of tomatoes for freezing, pickling and making sauce.

I sell some of mine to a local group who then sell it at their veggie and farmers market stands, before I just used to give it away but I'm growing a lot more now than I was then... well maybe not this year if these monsoon rains don't let up. It has been raining about 10 days now, right when I should be getting a lot of stuff planted and the ground is totally saturated, the lettuce is loving it though.

lettuce just doesn't give a shit about rain. it drinks that shit right up. mine is going strong, already have 3 plantings down, spaces about 2-3 weeks apart.

I space my lettuce out a little but plant the bulk of it all at once, I start throwing some seeds in spots around valentines day even if it's just on top of the snow... I usually get a few early plants that way, then when I can work the ground I get out and plant a bunch of it, then plant a few more spots of lettuce as I get the garden going. I always let some bolt to save seed so I don't have to buy it.

About week from now it's going to start heating up again and that will probably be the beginning of the end of the lettuce here, plus I need to harvest a lot of it to clear some of the space out for peppers and other things.

Finally dry enough to finish getting my tomatoes planted, well most of them, I might add another row for the starts I have left. Man my arm and shoulder are killing me.

for anyone waiting, denver has been having some shit weather. hail, rain, snow, 20-30 degree below average highs, very little sun or warmth. i don't think a single seed has popped after 10 days.

corn needs warmth to germinate and we have had none. may have to replant completely.

My corn is like two feet high, first corn I ever grew....hope I get corn. I don't have any 60-0-0 hopefully I can use 15-16-17 or 23-7-12? Or would that be bad?

Thanks uncle buck

That blows. Our weather is unusually cool but Im not whining. It should be 100 and its only like 85. Fricken soil sucks for veg gardening here. I'm not even gonna try this year.

went down all 6 rows with a pickaxe and loosened all the soil up. then i took recycled soil from the indoor grows and dropped 6 inches of it in each row. transplanted whatever corn was in the greenhouse to the field and replanted seeds both outside and in the GH.

only 8 of 192 came up outside, but even worse, only about 45 of 150 came up in the greenhouse in perfect soil and perfect conditions.

i'm sick of the shitty seeds most companies sell.

Good job, Buck. Been years since I had a big garden, now it’s just tomatoes. My favorite seed companies were Johnny’s, Territorial, Botanical Interests, Fedco and Southern Exposure Seed Exchange. Always had good luck with them.

Just planted a small 4x8 or so patch of corn, 4 rows pretty close together, first try ever growing corn... maybe a little late here, old seeds I had, packed for 2011.

I had some pepper seeds that I thought were bunk this year, Jimmy Nardello pepper seeds from Baker Creek. I had like a dozen in the first tray and only 2 sprouted, most of the other peppers I had in the same tray sprouted well. So I do a second tray about a month later and almost all of the Jimmy Nardello sprouted, same conditions, maybe just a hair warmer.

I try to save my own seeds whenever I can but I don't want a bunch of cross pollinated tomatoes and peppers.

So if my corn sprouts, are the rabbits that ravaged my peas going to eat the small starts?

I germ corn seed all the time for seed sprout teas in house temperature (70 degrees). I soak seeds for 24 hours, rest on a wet towel for 24 hours. Repeat this process for 6 days. Corn takes longer to germ then most other seeds ive used.

so after i transplanted the 50 or so seedlings form the greenhouse and replanted the rows after amending the other day, we got marble sized hail the next day. pretty much wiped out my entire garden.

Weather out there is crazy huh? We've had hot days and super cold nights and I think thats whats killing my cucumber plants. First year I didn't do corn. I go deep sea fishing every spring on one of the party boats out of Gloucester MA, and catch 300-400 large ro mid size mackeral for the garden. I usually put one mackeral under each plant and man they love it. I used to use composted chicken shit and since I switched to the fish the garden has been growing out of control. Corn love fish from what Ive seen. I go to local farms and use the corn seed they use and never had a problem with sprouting. When I buy that walmart shit it grows but they look sickly. Good Luck with garden.
