Depends on your soil. If it has enough nutes built into it, I suppose you could get by with water only. Typically you would use soil with little or no nutrients, and start feeding a week or two after sprouting. You'd feed something that's all purpose (NPK ratio of 1:1:1, or maybe higher N, like 2 or 3:1:1.). In flower you'd give more P and K. Probably later in flower.

As far as feeding, I don't think autos are different than photos. I grow both and I can't say I've noticed a difference.
