color spectrums?

Hello again,

I've been looking into color spectrums for a few weeks now and I've read some stuff that makes sense but other growers report different results and I'm just curious to know what the advanced growers think... I've read that in veg it's good to give the plant a blue spectrum of light and while it's in the flower stage blast it with redish-orange colors... I've also read that it's the opposite, red and orange for veg and blue for flowering. Some people say they ONLY use blue or they ONLY use red. As you can see I'm a bit confused now. I know during the Spring and Summer more of the blue spectrum of light makes it to us and more reds and orange around the end. Knowing that marijuanna is a spring/summer plant it would make sense to have blue for veg And red for flowering Considering that the sun gives off more reds and orange colors and the plant recognizes this as winter approaching. Can anyone give lead a hand?

MH - blue spec for veg

HPS- red spec for flowering.

You can use HPS red spec for the entire grow if you want.

Some folks report more internode spacing using HPS start to finish. I never encountered the problem but I veg for less than 7 weeks.

You can use MH blue start to finish. You'll get higher THC production but less overall yield.

You can mix the 2 and have a balanced spectrum and use CMH from start to finish.

You can also use a 10K spec uvb for the last 2 weeks to boost THC production.


Personally I use MH for veg and 2 weeks of 12/12 then swop out for my HPS.

To add to any confusion.
I prefer a mixed spectrum of light, for example right now in flower, I have 2x600W HPS and 1x400W MH running. Seems to be working.

What if I slap an LED light that has both colors (blue and red) shining at the same time?? Just curious to know what would happen.

Supplemental light, plants love it.
Interesting, very interesting. Thus growing shit is awesome. I should have taken this route along time ago Instead of moonshinin hence the name "ibsippin"....This is way safer and cheaper. You guys rock, thanks for the info!

I agree with ibsippin......I run a 600w HPS with a 400 MH in flower and feel that the mix gives me more dense buds.

In veg I go with T5HO's (6K and 6.5K) and plants love 'em.

It's not as simple as "red for flowering, blue for veg".

For best results, you need to cover the whole spectrum. HPS actually has more yellow and orange than it does red, but the point is that it generates "white" light.

Looking at a spectrum chart of HPS, it's hard to see red as being the reason it's so good considering the majority of the relative power output is in the yellow-orange region.



Too much blue in flowering will make flowering take longer, but will give you more resin production, but you will always need some blue.

Blue during veg will stimulate chloroplast development, but will reduce yield in plant mass, so it's said to be better to have more blue in veg.

It would be a terrible idea to veg in pure blue light.

Compare the HPS spectrum to the 3000k 80cri white led (blue light with wideband yellow phosphor). This also has a peak centered in the same area, but a bit more blue.

I'm sure I could tweak my veg area's T5's for a broader spectrum and such, but honestly I find little fault with just going with 6K bulbs.....the plants grow just fine under them.
