Can I use a metal halide in the beginning?

I plan on starting some autos for my first grow (I want some good bud for my wedding anniversary in April.) I have a 400watt MH/HPS cool tube and a 32'x32'x64' grow tent.
Would it be ok to use a metal halide for germination until the second or third week?

you can use MH all the way if you want to

Just watch out as a 400w mh is a bit big for freshly pop`d seeds but after a week or 2 they`ll take it fine

I`d run the MH for 4 weeks or so then switch to hps and then I`d try to add the mh back for the last 2 weeks or so if you can

MH`s seem to be able to frost up buds better but hps makes plants grow fatter buds normally

can depend on the K rating of the MH lamp most are around 4000k to 7000k so very good for veg and a 4000K can flower up some pretty nice plants solo but hps will get you more yield.

I agree. Seedlings will jam under MH too...just don't blast them.
I recently completed a grow using an MH for nearly the entire grow and got amazing quality. I might have sacrificed on weight...who knows.

On subsequent grows, I will be doing exactly as Konassure said.

MH from the start. If I want to reduce the stretch a little, then also thru the pre-flower stretch and start the HPS right after.
MH last 10 to 14 days for the added sugar.

yes sir thatll do just fine, metal halide is optimal in veg and personally i grow autos under a 600w MH from seed to harvest so your good just as long s you keep a good 3-4 foot distance for the first week or so to be sure you dont fry your lil guys.

Thanks a bunch... I had read somewhere that it was good to use the MH in the beginning but also a ton of people on here saying no just use HPS. What you guys said makes sense and I'm going to try it.

I use a 400 watt MH for the first 3 weeks with my autos and then HPS for the remainder works well for me

for sure start w/ MH just not intense/direct, may even want to humi-dome seedlings for that first few days, but yea, when you see the flowers forming, switch to hps light, til then, let her roll on the bright white (blue) light its loving on during veg
