Air gap between bottom of netpot and waterline?

Ideally the water level should be right around the bottom of the net pot. And inchnor two below won't hurt a thing. The danger in DWC is getting the water level too high not too low. Water levels that are too high in a DWC setup, particularly in places with a lot of salt in the water, can cause basal stem disorder or elephant's foot. If this happens your plants will die before your eyes. Not cool. Never let the water get anywhere near the area where the stem meets the medium. I know this sounds stupid but you'd be surprised how many people do it and lose their plants in a flash. Also just as a side note; If you're not already, be very conscious of your water temps. Absolutely crucial in DWC.

My .02 Heath Robinson said leaving an air gap will waste energy growing
cord roots (thick roots look like cord)bring the water level up to the bottom of plant.I tried it Heath was right, now I tend to believe people that can get 72ozs out of 1 plant in a w/f.That tree grow he did gets me wide eyed. It's still hard to bring that level up that high but it works.

You will get faster root development if you leave your buckets half empty. Leaving the root mass above water with the tap roots in water will promote root growth as the plant strides to access the water supply.

Also the more roots exposed to air getting water droplets on them the better. More Oxygen means faster feeding and eventually an affect on yield.

Fill a plant A with 4 gal of water on day 1 and leave it until empty.

Fill plant B with 2 gal on day 1 and 2 gal once water level is low.

Bet ya find the lower water level leads to faster uptake, especially pre flower
