I bought some equipment and beans online and now Im a bit worried about it. Anyone hear of anyone getting caught for this using their own credit card? Ive heard of the govts hot watch program, which to me is an insane invasion of privacy. I was just looking to set up a small personal grow and now Im contemplating not even starting..

Don't worry. Last year I ordered lights, nutes and other equipment off ebay and seeds from various vendors at the same time. It's actually been over a year and I still haven't heard a peep.

It's not the ordering that is dangerous. The busts for those things these days are still low, it's telling people, letting the smell run wild and being dumb while growing that will get you busted.

Some tips though. I personally wouldn't visit a local hydro store. In some places cops are parked nearby almost 24/7, track plates and start snooping around at your place. Digging through trash etc. I've heard of (reading many, many news stories) way more busts from people visiting hydro stores than ordering online. I thoroughly investigated this for days before ever getting started because I was far more paranoid than you.

Don't buy used lights etc off craigslist.
Don't put tin foil or any other crap on your windows. Put regular colored curtains up with another layer of blinds then cover from the inside.
Don't let your lawn, house, yard etc look like shit. Keep it like nice, just like the rest of the neighbors.
Don't put a bunch of exhaust ducting out windows or weird places.
Don't throw anything in the trash that is even remotely growing related. Particularly since it's winter time.

Don't worry about your orders man, you're good.

I've ordered countless pieces of equipment thru ebay, Amazon, and direct from hydro stores. Not to mention many seed orders from several different seedbanks. I used my real name, credit card, and address. Never had a problem.

What they all said.

Rules:
1 - Keep your mouth shut.
2- Don't get greedy.
3 - Don't do anything illegal while you're doing something illegal.
4 - Keep calm and carry on.
I was gonna suggest something but Hugo here said it best.imo definitely said it better thanbi could have...plus if your worried about getting caught with equipment like Hugo said wait till flowering and drying stages....stanky.I live at end of a coldasac neighbor closest 100ft away still and I'm in a 8x4 tent I'n spare bedroom with it blowing exhaust I'm to inner wall heading to the bathroom but dosnt go all the way it sends it in the center wall it's to to far or I'd just point it towards the top of fireplace or chimney.what ever you wanna call them I've seen somewhere the smokestack accessible towards top of eve just face it blowing same direction... But then again I'm not in fear so much either some 5 people know I do this my wife, mom,,sister,my buddy who would usually just give some to for all the favors and help he does for me..

Most companies ship that stuff discretely.
No worries. I'm in non medical state.
I also grow a shit load of house plants. I have a whole room for potting and growing.

Pots, soil and what not do not seem out of place.

i have had a few worries. last time i ordered seeds the seller hand wrote my address, and a 4 looked like a 6. a neighbor got my package of seeds. tracking said they were delivered but i did not get them, so i called the post office the next day and the driver was able to get the package and put it in my mail box the next day. i am lucky the neighbor did not check their mail that day.

once i bought a 400w ballast off ebay when i lived in an apartment. The ballast came shipped to my apartment office in the box itself... bunch of famcy pictures and grow light stamped all over it and shit. lucky for me again, the lady in the office was some oblivious average puppet stumbling her way through life and didnt even seem to notice or care.

Yeah I can see that causing some issues, particularly the seeds. One thing I check on ebay if I haven't already purchased from a seller is the negative and neutral feedback because many people get pissed and voice it if they order equipment with "discreet" packaging but it comes advertising "this guy is growing".
