Aerogarden for starting seeds?

Just pulled it out of the closet and was wondering if it would be a good thing to start the seeds in. Not sure what, if anything, can be used for the medium that I could move straight into the trays. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

seeds with hybrid vigor will outgrow it too fast. it will be harder to tame especially if bagseed or a sativa.

stick to dirt and keep it simple. or for the anal retentives... a soilless mix

LOL, my plants typically reach 4 feet. Actually I was just hoping to start them in the aero. I run hydro now, no dirt. I wanted to get away from RW to start them. I do see the company sells seed starter kits. I will use it for cuttings and just use neoprene discs. Seeds are another issue though.

Hey Waterdawg, seeing you about here a lot lately. This isn't meant as advice as I don't know what I'm doing yet, but I've had good luck starting my seeds straight in their growing medium, which for me is a mix of Vermiculite and ceramic stone. Don't have to disturb them to transfer and they just seem to do their thing:/ I currently start them in a small DWC but intend to switch to Aero once time allows. Would be great to see how you go starting in that Aerogarden! Give it a shot and post them up!

Hey Uzzi
Dont know a lot either lol. I have always started them in rock-wool or dirt but was just thinking of trying something new. I really dont like rock-wool. I am putting them in jiffy pods and going to try that. They have to go in something tonight as they have germinated now. I'll let you know how it goes.

i have been using an aerogarden to start my seeds for atleast 5 years now works like a charm, i use rockwoal cubes
How do you secure the cubes in the lid holes and then get them out with the roots coming out of them. I'm actually just about ready to do some clones. Again I ask how do I place them in the holes lol.

this is my method for how I used to do clones in it. I have upgraded my entire system so and it came with a closer so that's why I no longer use the aerogarden except to germinate seeds . First I take a pin or something relatively slim and stick it through the hole at the top of the Rockwoal through to the bottom. Then I wet the rock woad take the clone put in the hole at the top and shove the Rockwoal in the hole . The cubes will form to the hole size nicely and works well

Just built my own aero, (20141031_161124.jpg thanks for the design, works great!!) for clones, germed 7 seeds and put right into hydroton and 2" net cup with neoprene collar over the top, and removed cup and stone within a week leaving the collar to hold the sprout. 4/7 in DWC and other 3 still in aero, tap roots 10". Just be careful, as sprouts have no stability if transplanting, so I left collar on for a few days.

i have been able to start my aero for the first time. last year i tested it and cloned a bunch of spearmint.

this year i started four seeds early, thinking only one or two would sprout. did the paper towel method. they all four sprouted, overnight at that. crazy.

i moved them directly from paper towel into two inch neoprene pucks. I left them in the paper towel for 24 hours after appearance of the taproot. which was exactly 24 hours after placing in paper towel.

i was worried that i would hurt them, or that the neoprene would be too difficult for them to grow through.

i was worried for no reason, these little buggers are getting after it. i was gonna use rockwool because i was scared to hurt the tiny little sprouts. i don't want to use rockwool. i want a media free aero grow. and apparently it's gonna work ok. i planned last year to take a couple cuttings and go media free from there but it just didn't happen. and this year, i was gonna go ahead and use just a rockwool starter and then move on to grow stones but i had already done this with cucumbers the week before. I had a bunch of those sprout so i tried it both ways, rockwool and straight into a two inch puck and they are all doing just fine.

one thing i did to the pucks before putting in the sprouts, don't know if it's necessary or if it helped or not but, i opened the puck and put in a pencil and let it sit for a while and kinda take shape, so it wouldn't be so tight on the sprout.

that may be an unfounded fear, after all, plants sprout through asphalt and concrete and roots and shoots and all kinds of plant growth destroys all sorts of manmade structures.

i can't wait. this aero is already impressing the hell out of me. it impressed me when i researched it and i have been working towards it for a long time. i built all mine out of five gal buckets for movability and just my setup demands it.

The ones I posted above were chopped Christmas Eve and yielded 7 ounces.
Could have been better, and this run will be.
I have 2 Amnesia Haze and 1 Jack Herer in these rock wool cups.
I am going to be putting them in a new grow medium from Suretogrow.com.
Check them out ! http://www.suretogrow.com/STG-Storm™-Series/TORNADO
I think this is gonna be the shit for medium.
I ordered little starter pucks for the seeds but I am on a timeline and need to get started now.
STG had these on backorder, but should arrive next week.
