Hard to say what chewed the top off. My bet would be a mouse or other rodent.

That plant won't regrow. Seedlings that young don't have the energy reserves to produce a second top.

Hey, I want to chime in on this; for starters, the bugs are a given outdoors, its wishful thinking to think that
they will remain unmolested before your first set of leaves. Yup, this sucks I went through it until I had to one
up them. Do this:

1. take your pot and a bungy cord, a screen; then wrap around like a mini greenhouse; this works great. also apply some
systemic bug control and you WILL factor the bugs out of the equation for a while. True story. Good luck, I
plan to put up some pics this time around, we'll see.

remember:

PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE; OTHERWISE YOU'LL NEVER MAKE IT TO FASCINATION STREET; INSTEAD,
THINK DISINTEGRATION! PEACE MON!

maybe its my area, and a colder climate, but bugs have never been a major issue, they're there, they get a meal, but don't do any real major damage

it has nothing to do with energy reserves, the plant has no nodes to spout new growth from
