Anyone use bark or granite in their soil?

I use shredded bark mulch as a top layer only....make sure there is no dye in it... it helps with keeping your soil moist under the hot lights...good stuff...and since I recycle my soil the mulch since it is shredded breaks down during decomposition and is good for the soil... so yes you could say I have it mixed in the dirt but only after recycling the soil in my pots...

I was actually talking about a bark that is fine like a powder and mixing it with
5 parts pine bark fines
1 part sphagnum peat
1-2 parts perlite

I have used coco coir as a mulch and it gets mixed into my recycled soil mix. From what I have read in most gardening books, a "green mulch" would probably be best suited for canna. If you have green lawn clipping from an area you know hasnt had salt fertilizers and weed killers applied. It would be interesting to see what pine needles would do. I would think it would change the ph of the soil too much.

As long as you use fine dolomite lime with your soil mix to balance the ph, you should be fine.

The bark will make the soil acidic & if you use the proper amount of dolomite, you'll keep the ph @ a 7.
