Default insect problem

one of my plants is starting to get eaten up pretty bad by some type of bug. whatever is eating it isnt thee whenever i check on it. what can i do to prevent this from happening?

if you were to post some pics you would probably get alot more help with your problem, or you could search around for what you need, im pretty sure it wouldnt be to hard
