You need plants where the plant itself smells, not just the blooms, mint, spearmint, peppermint,

coriander (cilantro) stinks beyond belief and it repels spider mites and aphids.

chives, garlic chives, sage, thyme

I have all these in my yard, and the mixture of scents is amazing, you wouldn't be able to smell pot growing here.

I have a balcony that is quite large and I have 3 plants(pics to follow soon) on the balcony in large pots. They are surrounded by tomatoe plants and various house plants to hide them from people walking on the sidewalk etc. I'm about 40ft away from the sidewalk that gets quite a bit of traffic. Will people passing by be able to smell the plants from that distance or should I be masking the odor(The good news is that I have a HUGE mint patch planted in the garden downstairs about 15ft away and I had no clue Mint would help hide the odour).

Thanks in advance,

SG

Go walk around and see if you can smell your plants. That's the best way to tell.

Mint will smell strong if you bruise the leaves. Each morning make like you are pulling a weed and squeeze a few of the mint plants. It will release the scent into the air. If you feel like you can't smell them very well bruise a few more. It shouldn't kill it, mint is one of those things that grow better if you waller it around a bit.
