Aha.. well, I know for a fact we've got wascally wabbits, too. Sure did feel like I wasted a good bit of money (and water) on those trees.

OK, I guess that's the proof right there. Buy your dogs big steak dinners, complete with baked potato.
My GOD, you're right!

What's that, Lassie, Jimmy's down the well? Here's a steak dinner WITH a potato!

Plants chewed at the bottom can also be the work of wood rats...seen 'em decimate plants..a good deer repellant can be made by taking a dozen eggs and cracking them into a container of some kind, adding some water and maybe some cayenne pepper, mixing it all up and letting it sit out in the sun for a few days...make sure the container has a ventilation hole or she'll blow scotty! It'll start to smell REAL rank--that's what you want--then use a kitchen strainer to pour the equivalent of 3 eggs to 2 gallons of water into a sprayer and spray the whole plant...deer are herbivores and don't like it...as for rats, traps are the way to go...if using the wooden ones they should be tied to something with some masonry twine or something or they'll disappear. Good Luck!

Thats funny, i just went to check on my plants and i saw a wabbit. By the way when i was fishing to today i spotted a mountain lion. It was less than 100 yards away from me. Whats scary is that mountain lions roam on 25 square miles and my plants are growing less than 5 miles from where i saw it. So its nerve racking going out there at night.

Some chicken wire is going to do you ALOT of good - deer don't like stepping on anything metal, so if you put fence screen/chicken wire down around on the ground too it would also help (besides the obvious - putting a cage around your plants). Deer and wascally wabbits really hate the smell of marigolds - pretty much any plant that has milky sap they don't like, so you could plant some in a perimeter around your plants.

Putrified eggs in a spray bottle work really well too -- a couple eggs, fill with water, leave in sun, shake, spray. It smells like HELL, but once it drys, humans can't smell it, only critters. The only bummer is that you have to reapply after every rain. But it does work. I live in a place where we had a pretty good drought in '05/'06 and the deer thought my garden right next the house was a buffet. The eggs worked, the wire/fence works, and also stringing heavy duty fishing line around at deer height works if they are just cruising through, they spook when they hit it, especially if it has bells or cans on it.

Pissing helps, but it doesn't seem to have much effect if the area is too urbanized. You could also get some predator urine stuff (they have synthetics that are good). There are little resevoir thingys that you fill and leave in say a tree (or on your chicken wire cage) and they just smell like coyote so the deer etc. stay away - but you will want to keep them full.

Good luck and happy growing!
