and when do the copters actually start searching?...I would think that they would start closer to harvest but who knows...

They're not looking now, because they know everyone's plants are only 6 inches tall. They'd be lucky to spot 'em if they were standing on top of them, let alone from a helicopter. It costs a lot of money to keep choppers in the air; they're not going to waste that coin now. But they'll be flying dawn to dusk by late July, early August.

And when they do, they fly anywhere they want. When I lived in Hawaii, they'd fly right down and spray plants that were growing right in people's backyards, even while the people were outside in the yards, then keep flying down the street looking for more. Private property don't mean jack.

Not every helicopter is looking for marijuana. People do other things with helicopters, too. There's no way in hell any helicopter is going to spot marijuana plants in the wild that are less than a foot tall. It's just not possible. The only danger they present this time of year is that they may spot you planting or preparing your grow, or some patches of freshly disturbed dirt in a prime growing area, and if they're really out there looking for anything at all that's got to be what it is. They know damned well they've got zero chance of spotting actual plants this time of year. Just be on the alert; if you hear that "Apocalypse Now" whup-whup-whup coming, just make like a hiker or whatever.

Yeah, people used to get pretty seriously cheesed about it, too. It wasn't just the people who lived on the properties that were getting sprayed; the neighbors were getting it, too. I remember stories about women sunbathing in their yard and the wind would blow a cloud of that herbicide mist all over 'em from next door; they'd just hit the fucking roof over it. Most of the people who live in Hawaii (well, at least most of the people I talked to) weren't all that crazy about the marijuana eradication programs anyway, because of the damage it did to the local economy. When weed was semi-legal, there was a lot of money flowing in the economy, but when the feds started cracking down on cultivation, a lot of businesses took big hits and a lot of entry-level jobs were lost. Which was all bad enough, but spraying innocent people with herbicide was just adding insult to injury.

On the good side, though, it was a plus for the people who were actually growing in their yards, if you think about it. If you're growing 3 or 4 plants, you're a lot better off having them just spray 'em from the air and keep flying than having them radio down to a squad car and have them come and seize the plants, and probably arrest you as long as they're there. Hawaiian cops generally don't give a rat's ass about locals smoking or growing dope anyway; half of them smoke themselves, and all of them have a brother or a sister or a cousin or whatever who grows a few in their backyard. I could tell you stories about how wide open things were back before Reagan started the anti-drug campaign, with cops tipping people off before they'd sweep an area. You could tell which areas were getting raided on any given day by which direction the pickup trucks were speeding down the highway away from with a half-dozen 12-foot marijuana plants in the back. Drug enforcement was pretty much a joke if you were a local, because everybody knew somebody who knew somebody on the department, and people there really stick together. That's the way it is on the Big Island, anyway, where I lived.

But anyway, the way the local culture is, cops figure if they've got to enforce the law and keep the federal money coming in, that's fine, but they'd rather not fuck around busting anyone for growing just a few plants. Better to just spray the plants so they can say they did their jobs, and leave the brother who was growing them alone. It's a bitch for the poor bastards who happen to be downwind, but for the grower, it beats the hell out of getting arrested.
