The sun produces around 10,000 lumens per square foot, I believe.

I don't know about all that, but the sun gives I think 100k lumens with no noticeable dropoff from the top of the plant down to the lowest branches, even on an 8 footer - with no electric bill.

the sun produces 10,000 lumen's per square foot and there is no need to worry about light penetration, if the plant are grown on a decent place outdoors. The sun does not lose lumen's like hps MH or CFls after a certain distance. the sun is the almighty and the best source to grow anything.

That is one of the biggest reason I would say the sun is better, the whole plant gets light. With an HPS or MH the light doesn't get down to the bottom of the plant well. Also the sun is 10,000 lumens per sq foot.

Thanks for all the replies guys, so i guess the consensus is that sunlight is just as good and probably better. i guess the explosion was caused by the nutrients. I recently had to shut down my indoor set up, and this makes me feel a lot better about putting my plants outside. The equinox just passed making sunlight 12/12, this is about one hour more of sunlight than they got in the room. how will this effect them? Should I try to limit their light to 11 hours?

I would say leave it on 12/12 outdoors. No need to only have 11 hours of light. 12/12 is perfect!
