To avoid this next year only go into bush at dawn(or just before).

If you find who it was, you should sit where they are, and wait on them.

when you stake out an area for a guerrilla grow a month before planting drop a few coins, half dollars, something of slight value that somebody will pick up if they are hiking by. Come back around the time you want to plant and see if they are still there. You can hang something by a string on a branch like a compass, or something of that nature too and see if it is till there a month later. Look for all signs of human activity like food wrappers, plastic bottles, cigarette butts and foot/boot prints. And yeah, like state above, plant at night, dusk or dawn so nobody sees where you are going.
