Default plant gel potting soil alternative

I was reading someplace that mixing this potting gel with soil helps extend the time between watering. Has anybody ever used or heard of this stuff? I had it a long time ago in some house plants i just wanted to know if anyone has used this in an outdoor grow. And if you used it was it effective?

Are you talking about those moisture crystals, I'm going to get those this spring, I m assumming they will work the same way s as a house plant, they just absorb alot of water
