Tree guards are good for keeping frost and cold winds at bay (frost usually comes in sideways). Using silica will also strengthen plants against temperature extremes. I know a guy who half buries water bottles (with chrome paint on one side) around their plants to absorb heat and reflect light during the day. Not sure how well this works but it sounds feasible.

depending how big your plants are you can just build a cheapo cold frame. Its like a little greenhouse.
