I am planning on growing on the edge of a corn field and wasn't sure if I should get some enriched soil and mix it in or just assume this farmer knows his shit. ideas?

when i transplanted out of the grow box i ran out of potting soil, so i went into the woods and dug a 5 gallon bucket out and finished transplanting w/ it. (i was trying to acclimate outside before moving to permanent spot). anyway, one of em that i put in str8 from the ground dirt did better then any of the others in the potting soil. i've found on here and thru exp. that a good dark soil usually is a good soil to plant in. and i'd say it's safe to assume the farmer knows his shit about where he's growing. after all, that's his bread and butter! lol

One can also assume he's applied herbicide, or will be applying herbicide soon. Common corn pre-emergent herbicides like atrazine last quite a while into the season. You can beat atrazine an other pre-emergent herbicides by digging a gallon or two sized whole and adding a grow mix of your own and by planting heathy transplants. Most pre-emergents work by preventing germination of seeds.

Post emergent spraying of herbicides like 24d is a threat in some areas. 24d is a cheap broadleaf killer that will literally twist your plants to death. Once the corn is about knee high the threat of the farmer spraying herbicides goes down to nearly zero.
