Just wondering how large of a pot I should use to grow outdoors.

Anything from 5 gallons up....preferrably up. Some friends of mine in Cali use buried trash cans full of their own special soil mix and can go weeks without visiting/watering. Obviously the larger the container the longer it'll stay wet.

at OSH i get 25, 42gallon trash bags for 10$. the soil is the expensive part!

If you are planting germinated seeds first of July and using the 1 gallon per foot rule would 5 gallons be plenty?

Generally, the bigger the container the bigger the plant.
I move most of my container plants thru the day to follow sun and for me anything larger than 3 gallons just gets to be too much.
I also move them into house or garage dark room to flower when I want to, and also to control environment better to avoid mold and P mildew.

They will get almost too big to move easily in even little 3 gallon containers.
