you will have to pack in water, and LOTS of it. you get hot and dry down there. if the area has surrounding growth that looks healthy the soil may be ok. i've planted as late as july and still gotten nice yields. you can plant now, that way you will have nice deep roots by the time the heat comes. either way you should do well.

like a mule. a back pack on your back. depending on where the nearest water is. i'm somewhat familiar with your area and i know it is very hot and very dry in the summer so i assumed you would have "to carry in" water to your plants. they will need A LOT.

i'm higher. nee neer, nee neer.

large dromadary bags would be good for packing the water in. peeps use them for camping for showers and such. They will fit in a back pack and wont leak. you can get them from campmor. I would just use water crystals which slowly give off water. 1 lb of Water-Keep crystals can absorb 47 gallons of rain water and 30 gallons of tap water. Instead of packing in heavy soil I would concentrate my efforts on tilling the soil thats there and packing in mulch, water crystals, extended release ferts, some vermiculite. This would keep the soil better than just putting in potting soil.
