got to brag about my red worm ladies tonight. I first built a rubbermaid that ultimately only brought me fruit flies and ow to the day.

So I bought a 5 tray farm. I kept it inside. It did ok, i fed it mostly coffee grounds and and in a full tray of coir.

It turns out I mismanaged that. I saw all these specials and read the 10k people who swear you can just throw in your scraps and it will work. I had tried and mixed in food and nothing.

Finally I tried again. More than coffee gournds, a bunch of lettuce, some onions. I put it all in a pile in the corner like the instructions say to. This time it worked. I lifted the lid and the worms has all gathered and were swarming the pile. It was almost gone. In one day. I added more, I added another pile, and another and sure enough a day later each pile had worms somehow swarming the piles! Yes! I was so bitter that all those stories of worms actually eating my food was bullshit and some crappy coir with half digested coffee grounds was all I would get.

I saw this farmer on tv who has massive worms tray with screens to seperate every three months all the castings and worms and undone things. He then adds half coir and he grows award winning vegatbles and herbs in this.

They work. Inside. Rubbermaid, i bet you could just get the top layer scraped as the worms flee down to escape light. Also I read the pile on each side till done, but. . .

you could just go to the plant nursery and buy the nursery trays they have all the plants in. I heard they are like a dollar if you ask. This is the very same as my worm tray for pretty much free. Cover the bottom one with paper and fill with coir. Place piles around the coir for a month. Cover it with something. The add another. Do the same. When all the worms are in the rth tray or so your bottom tray will be killer and you will have twice as many worms. There you go. Your ewc sog set up.

You can also go slower like me and harvest every tray each month as I am in a hurry these days to get it all together. THe key is pile of food so they can swarm. They also love bread I here. But woow the fresh lettuce makes them crazy.

A buddy of mine used to have a worm tray but he fed them espresso grinds and they stopped eating and eventually died. It could have just been a coincidence but they were doing fine before he put those in. haha

lol, so far mine have crazy over lettuce. Onions too, but they dont really go for the coffee or the bread like they should.

I ofund a worm in the pot of one of my plants tht i used the castigns on. This plant was stunted, I can not figure out why. This might be the reason. In containers worms will stunt. It is those little eggs I did not count on those. not a big deal. I just have to harvest right.

I have found that my worms like green beans. They devour them. I wouldn't think a worm in your plant would hurt it? Do worms lay eggs...I have so much to learn still...I thought they had cocoons?

Dirt Clean.... Worms in your pots will not hurt Mary. They will loosen up your soil, making pathways for oxygen & water/nutes.
.
When using worm castings, if you topdress more than 2 inches, you can cut off the fresh supply of oxygen, gathered by the roots closest to the surface.
.
If more that 20 percent by volume is used in soil mixes, it can create barriers of (heavy) soil, Mary's roots will have problems pushing through / pass. Either of those will slow growth.
.
SlipperyP..... I just love this site on worms. The info is correct and easy to follow, even while Stoned.....

Default Plans?
Nice lookin' bin Slippery.
Does anybody have any plans/links to plans for building a worm bin. I understand the simple type, but was looking for something with multiple trays for easier harvesting.

And once again OhSo, nice thread and thanks for keepin' it alive.
