Hey Bagalthief
if you have a R.O. setup, you do not want any chlorine getting to the R.O. membrane, that is what the two pre-filters are for, to remove all the chlorine and large sediment. the first filter removes sediment, the second chlorine + sediment, the third everything that is left. you need to check your chlorine level after the second filter, the last filter before the R.O. membrane. check home depot, pool store, fish store or google for a simple chlorine test kit. if you live in a big city you probably have chloramine instead of chlorine, if so you have to get the right pre-filters and test kit. chloramine is harder to kill than chlorine, it does not go away just letting it set for a day or two, you have to get choramine remover from your local fish store.........READ tha LABEL...... also, if chlorine or chloramine did get to the R.O. membrane it's time for a new one........ check this link Filter Packages about halfway down you will see the ULTRA CHLORAMINE PACKAGE this is a good site to get educated on R.O. systems, and they have fair prices hope this helps r Last edited by rds5150; 10-24-2008 at 04:19 PM.. hey thanks RD. i think i will call my water company and see which one they use. you seem to know alot about RO systems...i have a quick question, hope you dont mind.
iv heard people say that if you use RO water, your plants will be deficient in a few minerals. i can only remember one, i think it was calcium? i know there were a few others too. someone said you have to add something called CalMg to the water. is this true? i think i might have a magnessium deficiency, becuase all of my plants have very dark purple stems. however, i think this person said that CalMg is non-organic, and that is a no-no for half of my plants. whats your input on the subject? +rep for the help bro.

yes, ro water has diminished quantities of all trace minerals, that's why your tds meter should be reading from 2 to 10 ppm for your ro output. yes, you need to replace these. i'm just getting into growing, so i'm the wrong one to ask as far which one's and how much, i'm sure someone will jump in and help out. i use ro for my fish tanks and i have to add stuff back, the good thing is that i control what goes back. i'm not going any deeper cause it's two totally different set-ups. i just use the pre-filters for my plant water, which removes all chlorine/chloramine and most of the sediments and has a tds reading of around 100ppm or so. i'm fairly sure at 100ppm i should be leaving anything my plants need. i will going with BMO's full line for nutes, so that should take care of anything i did lose. i know this did not answer your questions, but i'm sure someone can................... r |

Dang, rds, someone else here who knows! A quick tip, for breaking down chloramine, sodium thiosulfate is the active ingredient in dechlorinating products, and can be had in crystal form (which is HIGHLY concentrated) for a few dollars per pound. Get yourself a couple of pounds and you could be set for life.

Hey Seamaiden
what about replacing the trace elements that an ro/di filter removes. for herb. with my ro/di , i get almost 0ppm w/di , and around 2-8ppm ro, thats in a big city w/chloramines wow i just had an epiphany, my waste water from the ro should be chloramine free, so instead sending it down tha pipes, feed it to my plants DaHHHHHH........................ i just use the ro/di for the fish, i prefer the pre-filters for drinking & other critters, the ro leaves it pretty much tasteless. . if you ain't green, then get green............................................. ...................................... Oh God, another fish geek! I am in heaven.
I have issues with RO/DI in the first place, and it mostly has to do with all the waste it creates. What I would do, honestly, is just add in a small bit of unfiltered water with the RO/DI output. |
