so I live in maine and our soil is pretty bad so I was thinking (growing outdoors) to save money I could dig up some holes and get the pile of dirt and add some nutrients like compost (that I can get for free) and some other things like eggshells, what, if anything, should I buy from the store for extra nutrients?

try adding some human urine, it helps cleanse the soil into really good stuff.

Just don't pee directly onto your plants, it'll burn them. Dilute it a bit and maybe let it sit for a day or two (milk jug).

Also, don't even think about using your own shit. Humans manure is full of nasty things not good for soil. Well, you could if you have a composting toilet, but I'm guessing you don't.

Mix eye-boogers with 1 gallon of water, and that helps the root growth too.
get one gallon of water and mix with 1/2 gallon of water. shaked until bubbly. have sit for 24hrs then urinate into water. add 3tbsp of garlic to water. this is old but good trick so many old school growers used.

Try to add some perlite to add ventilation to the soil. As for adding fish, is this going to be grown near where you live? thats gonna really stink after a while. Don't need or want fishy bud. Oh and flush your plant before harvest to help rid it of all that shit. luck to ya.

These are very important. u can add all sorts of stuff to ur soil to help feed ur plants but keep inmind u can always add lots when u fertilize. how eva if ur soil is compact and unamended ur roots cant grow and ur plants cant feed. If ur soil is clay like def add lotsa perlite or sand for airation and drainage also good crushed oyster shell u can get at feed store for chikens or aragonite u can find it at petstores used for gravel in saltwater aquariums. also some fine dolomite lime is def needed indoor or out to buffer the ph and add ca and mg. if ur soil is really rocky pik out the large stones and u can add vermiculite to help keep moisture.
Compost is u best bet for adding some nutrients to ur soil dont be skimpy and make sure to use lotsa amendments and ull have a happy and bountifal harvest gl and happy gowin
