Utopia Haze and BioBizz Range

Another week or so and bring em down.

Staggering harvest is fine...it's not that much of an inconvenience.

Looking tasty!

No camera so no photos today!

Just wondering because the plants are showing spurts of new growth around their bud sites (pistils/calyxes)... I don't want to send them into a second stage of flowering... at least until I chop the main colas off.

Most of the base of fan leaves near the top of stacks are not exactly frosty.

Trichomes are looking mostly cloudy with a few clear and a tiny minority of amber (seen probably a couple dozen out of millions).

The foxtailing one on the left might go the whole way (to 80 days or more) but I think I will chop the rest tomorrow which is day 77.

The hygrometers arrived and are itching to be used.

If I wait another week or ten days I run the risk of letting the trichomes turn amber, and I do not want that at all.

I grew this strain for its incredibly clear high - when I smoked it last year it was the pick of the Barney's bunch (along with Dr. Grinspoon and G13; and we smoked nearly all their menu over a week) - and to have it smoke like any old generic shit that comatoses you would be ultimate fuck up. So, I'm inclined to chop earlier rather than later.

Four out of five were cut down yesterday (day 79) morning. Took five hours from midnight.
Had thirty plus hours of dark beforehand.

One straggler which is going to 84 days (Sunday) then getting whacked. Under the full force of 250W HPS all by itself now.

Buds have been drying for 36 hours now. Good to start curing in a day? Ambient RH in the drying cupboard is about 55% depending on the time of day. Hygrometers are ready to go as are the jars. For the record: CALIBER III HYGROMETERS RULE!

I will freeze the trimmings in a semi-airtight plastic box when the buds get put into jars, ready for later hash-making. Trimmings from the last plant will get added later.

I might do a wet weight but will probably wait until after a few weeks of curing to measure.
Bear in mind: my first proper grow indoors, inefficiencies like fucking up the pH for a while, only a 250W HPS light, and inexperience in harvest.
I will have to put my growing into hiatus as I'm moving out soon and will have to pack up.
I'm thinking Tangerine Dream next time.

As for the smoke - I've had a fair bit of Utopia Haze at Barney's in Amsterdam. Super clear high, three hours plus of brilliant, uplifting, cerebral "utopia." Clarity of the high is brilliant, that's why I thought I'd grow it as my first proper grow. As for flavour I can't remember too well; it was over a year ago and to be honest smoked a shitload of top draw that week.
As for the way it smells pre-harvest and right now: very citrus-y - a lemon/orange tang (which sounds oddly reminiscent of the reviews I've read for Tangerine Dream, which is a cross between G-13, Neville's and an Afghani). Super fresh, sugary odours!
I know sativas are notoriously picky plants and stretch (three out of five did for me), but this was strictly a connoisseur's grow. ;)

p.s. nice grow!

True to form the straggler went all the way to 84 days, as predicted.
Two days plus of darkness made this a sticky beast.
I'll post updates soon of the cure for the other four, which seems to be coming along fine.

It's a good smoke already after one week. Probably not as clear-headed as I thought it would be (comparing it to the smoke in Amsterdam), but very potent (probably a sign of an early harvest or short cure).
It's got better and better over the course of a week. Took it camping for a couple days and even during the trip it cured into a citrus monster! The buds started with a musty smell and have matured to have a spicy, citrus flavour - it absolutely reeks of lemon/orange tang when growing. I just smoked a joint of the last plant to go (on the right in the big jar); this was harvested a week later and has a lot more floral smell and taste to it, the buds are not as dense as the other plants. Bud density is medium to fluffy. I can't tell you about yield, but after probably smoking and ca$hing in on about an ounce there are probably 4-6 more. I can weigh it later but I have to get a proper scale first.
I have separated the buds into the medium-and-lower-sized buds (most full jar, left); the largest, chunkiest, most compact buds (personal stash, middle jar); and the last to get harvested (on the right). Doesn't look like a lot but it's quite packed in the jars.
Recommended for taste, yield and average to good bud density. Tolerant and was not picky or demanding nutrients-wise.

Operation: success.

p.s. hygrometer overdose, got enough for double what I yielded!

I nipped this bunch of calyxes off by mistake while trimming one of the main colas.

That pretty much wraps this thread up, thanks for reading and I hope to start growing again soon in the next few months.

I'm thinking Tangerine Dream, G13, or a really heavy-yielding and heavy-hitting Indica like a Kush.

p.s. the cure is getting better and better... high much more refined (high and taste-wise), and greater clarity as expected...
