Default Your thoughts and opinion are much apriciated!
So i am going to do a mostly organic run. heres what i got so far:
5 gal bucket with air stone in bottom covered 1/3rd full of hydrotone.
2/3rds of this mix:
50% canna coco
25% perlite
12.5% roots soil
12.5% EWC
I want to use kelp, bone, and blood meal. any suggestions on how much of each?
am going to use some great white for inoculation.
I have a mineral mix of 20% each: azomite, green sand, glacial rock dust, rock phos, lime stone. again suggested amount on this? think i still need fast acting lime and or epsom salt?
i am thinking this is good for veg and will linger during bloom. was thinking of just adding some pura vida and vermi t in bloom....what do you think? (dont really wanna brew my own tea)

How many grows do you have, because if your new your makeing it one complicated mess.Keep it simple till you get a few good grows under your belt.I use plain oceans forest with 20% worm castings with organic nutes and Ive been growing off and on for 30 years. No need to complicate things...........peace and good luck

simple, complicated...all kind of relative yes? you think I would get more results if i posted in advanced? I think i have a pretty solid theory behind all of this.
Ive done soil. then hydro. then coco. don't want to post my whole life story and grow experience but ill just say that my journey has lead me to believe that the best way to grow would be mostly organic, paying special attention to the micro heard. I say mostly because from my research there are nutrient levels in chem hydro you cant achieve from pure organic. problem is if you use to much chem though you will kill a micro heard. I believe the quality you get from the natural micro heard/plant relationship by far out does the quality of pure chem. so I was on this quest to get the best out of both worlds. a fellow RIU member pointed me in this direction http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=116431 it was exactly what i was looking for! the method has been coined obbt and there are a few threads on the subject. very long read but very worth it. upon reading all the threads on the subject i clearly had some research to do on organics. I did and am still doing research on organics. the recipe in question doesn't seem far fetched at all. all of the ingredients have been chosen for a reason. I am just unsure about how much of certain things i should use. also i want to make sure that i am not leaving anything out and that everything will be proportioned correctly. For example I know S and Mg ratio is important as well as Ca to Mg.
As my name states, this is my passion. More then a hobby. I love it. it is so fun to grow and learn.

stay away from "fast acting" (ie hydrated) lime and go real easy with the blood meal (if you must use it at all)... they're both quite hot and will burn your babes easily. why not use wormcastings to get yer N (among their many other benefits) instead of the bloodmeal? the Mg certainly won't hurt and will most likely be helpful, so long as you have a sufficient pH buffer (like dolomite).
finally, since you don't want to brew your own teas, you might do well to check out BMO—they rock!

cheers

I think i am going to ditch the blood meal and get some high N bat guano. Ill start off pretty light on the bone meal and bat guano and see what it does. The BMO looks really nice! ill give it a shot for sure.
thanks for the advice guys.

I'm with you man, going out and finding new stuff to add to your own homemade soil mix is a lot of fun.

I think your mix looks pretty good. You've got a pretty good mix of fast and slow acting fertilizers.

If you're mixing 3 gallons of soil, I'd put maybe 2/3 a cup of the bone meal, blood meal and 1/3 a cup of the kelp meal and "mineral mix."

If you get some epsom salts, look for "Epsom Plus" by Espoma, it's got K added.

You can layer your "soil" mix inside your bucket. In the bottom, right on top of the hydrotron you'll put the "strong" soil, with lots of stuff added in. On top of that, you put the soil with nothing added. That way, your young plants can grow roots in the "plain"soil. They won't burn. Then as your plants grow the roots reach into the extra fertile soil. Check out the Super Soil thread in the Sub Cool forum for more info.

If your mix is too strong, you'll be able to tell fairly quickly. Your plants will look kinda "twisted." Your leaves will be deformed and ragged, stems will be purple showing stress, ect. If that happens just dig out your plants and "water down" your soil mix by adding more inactive ingredients. (increase the volume of soil, without increasing the amount of fertilizer.)

The stuff in your mineral mix is pretty slow acting. Like Greenthumbs says, you'll probably be better off mixing your soil before hand and letting it "cook" for awhile.

I don't have any experience with Pure Vida or Verma T, but there may be enough P in your mix not to worry about adding anything else. Bone meal and rock phosphate will provide a lot. Also, you can always top dress with some bonemeal. If my plants start to show signs of deficiency I just top-dress with some of my fertilized soil mix.

Finally, have you grown in "soil" with an airstone in the bottom before? I've seen the idea come up before, and intuitively it seems like it would be awesome. I've been thinking of trying it, but wanted to hear from someone who'd actually done it.
