about 2 weeks ago i transplanted into a 4 gallon pot. i did 10% perlite, and then the rest was a 50/50 split of top soil and peat moss.
im thinking that the peatmoss may hold to much water. as the top 1.5 inches is dry and under that is is still damp but the pot hasnt lost much weight. im thinking i may repot again. would 15% perlite, 15% worm castings, 20% peatmoss (sparagnum i think its called) and 50% top soil be better? should i add some bone and blood meal into it as well? I dont have access to any Guano's unfortunately as i am in a remote place! also, should i soak the soil first before transplanting, then transplant. im thinking that could be one of my issues with this last transplant, as it looked like the soil was pulling away from the side of the pot. thanks in advance TK |

You can go higher on the perlite. Like 25% is what i'd recomend. 1/3 of mix is generally considered max for worm castings so anything less than that is fine. Make sure you check your ph in the soil as peat is acidic. You can adjust it up with dolomitic lime if it's too acidic.

I'd have thought your water ph would be lower than that after being RO'd but then i'm not real familiar with ro systems. My ph is 7.5 right out of the tap. 6.2 to 6.8 is about right. I ph my water to 6.5 with lemon juice or ph down. wichever bottle I can find in my mess.

@gsljacobb: Haha, it does look a little like a basil hybrid.
@tkjoe: How are you liking the peat moss? I tried it last year, but I had issues with mold. This year I'm just using Miracle Grow, perlite, and worm castings. I get my water for 25 cents a gallon at the water store, but I've never ph tested it. I'm curious how the branching is on your plant. My largest plant had branches about one inch a part, my shorter plants are about half that. If you get a chance, take a side picture. |
