What organic stuff should I add to help my sandy soil? Would mud from around a lake help? My plots are near a small lake and there are plenty of big healthy native plants.

I use to grow in Florida and fought that problem. Hauling up lake muck is hard and that stuff is very acidic on top of that. I think that your best bet is to make a little compost pile with leaves and grass clipping and some of your kitchen scraps like egg shells, fruit and veggie stuff. No meats, grease or dairy products. Get a little bat guano, cow manure, rabbit manure, something in those lines and mix. Add some dirt or sand in with the mixing, I use about equal amount of volume soil and mixings to start. Turn your pile once a week and soon you will have great soil to mix in with the sand.

Good info thanks canefan. Composting isn't very realistic for me though. I have just been lugging bags of fox farm ocean forest around for the time being. But actually, maybe i can try composting near my plots.
