This topic has been discussed, but not all that much, at least on RIU.
Here's the background, I've got a nl#5 about 3 weeks into flower. Generally been doing well, but I inspected it today and the dreaded purple/blue tinge of phosphorus deficiency has begun to show. My feel is with 5 weeks of flower to go, that's too soon to have this issue. The soil used was 2 gallons of MG Organic Choice with 10% perlite. Total of 2 tbps MG Organic Bone Meal(6-9-0) and 2 tbps dolomite were mixed in soil. Appears most of the P has been sucked dry. The only feeding that has been done is with 1/2 tsp molasses in 2 quarts water. I've added the 1/2 tsp molasses to 2 quarts water, been fermenting for 24 hours. Just added 1 tsp of the MG bone meal today. Just going to ferment another 24 hours more. I know there many that will say that is not enough time. I did find some good info that this will provide a gentle P boost. The MG meal is very fine powder, supposedly this will aid in the partial release of the P. I know that it has some extra N, but I'm planning on revegging after harvest. So I have 24 hours before the deed. Anyone going to tell me if this is a bad idea? |

1 tsp of bone meal? I guess this bone meal is fast release? Usually it takes a long time to break down. 1 tsp? No way! Use more, right? lol, I have never read the miracle grow version's lable. I would go to lowes. I would get some alaska morebloom. 0-10-10. I would add 1 tbsp a gallon. I would also pick up a bag of compost. I would use my molasses to the tune of 1 tbsp of molasses to 4 cups of compost to a gallon of water. I would let that aerate, or shake vig every few hours. Then I would mix a few cups of that to my bucket of alaska morebloom and feed. That is amazing you got buy with no ferts so far. You want buds, get some ferts!

Teatreeoil,
Thanks for the advice and look. Yeah, I pressed the envelope with my soil. My 1st plant got cooked in mgmc, so i'm a little wary of too much nute. you have reassured me that i won't be going too far, didn't think so but good to have experienced advice. I'm doing a kind of extreme micro-grow, plant is 21 inches tall, my guess is 24 will be my finish height. Grown under 78 watts of cfl. I know, that's low, but I was shooting for a stealth setup. Everything has been scaled down, including nutes. Pic included for sanity check. 1 tsp is just for 1 feeding, plan to do more, just not all at once. i did find some pretty good experiences of some other growers that seem find you can get the P out of the meal a little faster than is thought. if interested i'll keep this thread updated, i think i can squeeze the P out, but we'll see. I'll take one for the team so to speak.

I'd try try adding ~1 tablespoons / gallon to some EWC tea...
- Bone Meal - Molasses - EWC - Maybe some kind of bacterial/fungal inoculant If you bubbled/stir that mix for a day, I don't see how the lil'uns wouldn't start goin' at the bone meal. |

I have looked locally for EWC, haven't found them yet. Don't have huge choice in my area. Kind of reluctant to buy over internet, cost being primary reason.
1 day after feeding, looks to be good result though not much change. Think there is a bit less blue/purp, actually pretty sure there is less blue purp, but 24 hours is not much time. Thanks for advice, + rep to both visitors |

you got have them somewhere. First try craigslist. Then look for nurserys. I can get a bag at armstrong nursery out here in ca for 8 bucks. Dont worry about the net. I order form them all the time. Besides man if you really cant then go ahead anyway, It is onyl worm castings and that is so far form illegal. you have no idea how many poeple have reg gardens. I myself have a reg garden I started as cover, which worked, and am now neck deep in herbs and vegatbales that all smell good! Anyway, just do it. Get a 30 dollar bag if yu do. Dont waste your time with the 10 dollar eBay stuff. That is a ziplock! Seriously google a nursery. Earth worm castings ewc. Or yu dould make yer own, it will take a while tho to get set up. Months.
Also I bet that the bone would get eaten. If yu really dont want ewc go get some compost. Like any store. Get a 5 gallon bucket. Throw in a quarter of the bucket with compost. Fill 3 gallons of water. Put 3 tbsp of molasses. Put an airtube in their. The bigger the better. Get the biggest airpump you can find or a bunch of smaller ones. Let it go untill you see some bubbles. After this, 12-30 hours our off all that liquid into another bucket. Throw in your bonemeal. Add your airlines. Let it go for 12-30 hours. You should get it ate up if they eat it up at all in a tea. I have no idea if they eat Bonemeal in a tea or how that works. I am curious now.

wasn't worried about internet purchase being flagged, just that it's expensive way to buy soil/nutes and such
i did notice something from the 1st batch of tea, which i'm sure wasn't the best tea my outflow ph'd pretty acid - looks to be below 6 - that's the limit of my drops wasn't able to ph my outflow till recently - too muddy - i did dolomite the soil with 1 tbsp per gallon soil such an acidic soil might help with breaking down the bone meal quicker, that and bringing up the ph a bit might be a good idea - the bone meal is supposed to do that to some extent there is an interesting set of experiences on icmag - some bone tea fanatics there 1 was a guy put 1 cup bone meal in a sock(a lot) and brewed in 1 gallon molasses water for maybe 3-4 days diluted with another gallon of water - if the bone meal breaks down slow you'd think it would be just a weak tea when he used it, it fried his flowering plants - had all the symptoms of intense nute burn - this is what got my interest just not going to brew anything that strong Last edited by growone; 06-17-2009 at 03:43 PM..
