Default Whats the right way to adjust ph with vinegar?
I wanted to try something natural to bring down the ph of my tap water. It was at about 7.2 and I brought it down to 6.5 with plain distilled vinegar. I watered my seedlings and the next morning they were completly dead. Half way up the stalk it was comepletly bent down at a 180 and the stems were real mushy. A couple I tried to save by cutting then dipping in rooting compound then sticking into fresh soil. Where did I go wrong?

You lowered the PH too soon. you should have lowered it gradually. nothing wrong with using Vinegar to adjust ph. I use vinegar and baking soda to adjust my ph.

Check Ph of soil first then look at ph of water sometimes they can balance themselves out.

7.2 ph in water is practically neutral

Soil ph tester are very inexpensive

Yeah, it's like giving bacon and eggs to a newborn. Don't give your seedlings anything accept LIGHT, WASTER & WARMTH! When they get a few sets of fan leaves, then you can start giving them a highly diluted feeding solution. You really shouldn't have any PH issues so early, the 7.2 tap water is fine for your babies. Just let it sit out for a day or so, so the chlorine can evaporate out of it a bit.

Organic gardeners use vinegar as a herbicide (weed killer). Not recommended.
Quote:
Acetic acid readily degrades in water (so I wouldn't spray right before an expected rainstorm) and doesn't bioaccumulate. Vinegar will decrease the pH of the soil somewhat, but within 48 hours the pH balance is back to its original state. It is also a biodegradable product.
