might be doing some outdoor gardening this year..


will be digging a pretty big hole and putting my own soil in it. (good topsoil w/perlite and worm castings)


i've heard of people throwing whole fish into the bottom of such holes.. i work on a fishing boat so have plenty of fish!


any particular fish species better than another? i'm thinking about going with Bunker/Menhaden (very very oily baitfish.. predators favorite)


also, i see many fertilizers are made with seaweed.. is it worth my time to throw some seaweed in the bottom of my hole as well? (would probably chop it up a bit)


edit: also, should i rinse the saltwater off the seaweed? i know plants dont like high salt concentrations

basically, i'm just not sure if this stuff would break down fast enough to be useful to plants.

any advice?

By the time you get the seaweed into the hole, the salt amount will/should be pure beneficial. Also, get all possible, & start a kick-ass compost pile. Fish.... Got a Cat or a Dog? Look at their mouth-teeth. Giving a Cat a 4 ft. fish, and expecting it to have food for 4 months is crazy. Look at the mouth on your root system..... A blender or an ole Indian woman to chew up the shit so the plant can absorb it readily is key. All the good food in the world is worhtless, unless it can be absorbed easily when needed. I wish I had a dump truck load of seaweed.

should i speed up the decomposition process at all? was thinking maybe take some chopped fish and seaweed, sticking it in a burlap sack, and leaving it out in the sun

SS,are you in the US?if so,what type of weed would you use?
IMO having any type of rotting meat's a no no,wrong bacteria.

Just add a shit load of your homemade fish emulsion and seaweed. Just make sure that you actually make an emulsion so the roots can break down the nutrients easily and you should be fine.

Also, I'll suggest getting some BMO Super Plant Tonic, you can find it on Ebay, just type in BMO. It has a lot of great stuff in it to help the decaying process of your fish and will help the plants uptake the nutrients better.
