Pine needles:
The foresty scent is reason enough to use pine needles, but they are also attractive as they decompose (slowly) and they allow water to seep through easily. Though they come from plants that prefer acidic soil, a 2- to 3-inch layer of pine-needle mulch will not substantially change the pH of your soil.

Good luck and good growing.

I dont know about outdoor mj but i use pine needles and the rich dirt it creates in everything I plant in my yard. My roses, trees and garden loves it. When I go down the north face of a mountain i wish i could take all that pine dirt was at my house. Good stuff imo. I just put about a 3 gallon bucket full in every hole or more and it works great.

Calmccoy18..... I'd say, they offer no real advantage to an indoor grower. Since you control temps & humidity indoors - loss of soil moisture is not such an issue. Like it is, when growing outdoors.
.
My vote - leave the pine needles out of the pots you grow in. Any woody mulch can absorb / lock up nitrogen - depriving your plants of it.
.
Hope this helps...
