Rds5150.... Darker colored pots, protect Mary's roots from light, which is important for healthy growth. . If you decide to use the pictured buckets, painting them would work. Just make sure to let the paint fully dry and out-gas before planting into them. Otherwise, a tiny Mary will draw in toxic fumes from the paint, and drop dead..... Ouch..... So, see this works in the Organic Forum.. we talk about out-gassing here..... . Hope this helps... Keep it Real....Organic..... . |

I meant to do just that with mine this grow, but somehow it got overlooked. It doesn't SEEM to be making a dif, but then, how would I know? I WILL paint the outsides black after this grow for sure. It might not make a dif, but it sure can't hurt.
MY concern with those pots you have is the Height to width ratio. My first grow I used square 4 gal buckets that were tall and relatively narrow like yours. The problem I ran into was trying to judge soil moisture content. The top of the pots would be dry, but the lower 1/2 would still be wet. I believe that was a big factor in my over watering my first grow. (Of course, overfeeding and nute burn didn't help either) I am using low wide pots this time, 5 gal buckets. I'd LOVE to find some short, wide 10 gal buckets from somewhere.

the reason that you want the pots to be black is to prevent light from penetrating to the roots. One way you'll be able to tell that things are not well is by the smell of mold, fungus ... It may even begin to form on the surface of the soil. The light penetrating the pot will provide light to the wrong places.

Oh I KNOW the theory behind it, thats what made me question it at the end of my first grow. Like I said, I MEANT to paint them this grow, but that kinda fell thru the cracks. I got no moldy smell, and the plants SEEM healthy enough, but I know that light does adversely affect roots, so better safe than sorry. Actually, I'm not gonna paint them. I have access to alot of black sign vinyl, and I'm gonna wrap them in it. Neater and safer.
