Default Substitues to Molasses
Hi I am new to all of this and was wondering if one could use organic honey or just plain syrup in substitute to using molasses? And how well the molasses or if possible other substitutes work? Also how do most go about applying? Just mix in with normal watering or does it need to be applied less often then other nutes? Sorry for all the questions but I am interested in adding weight to a harvest just like I am sure everyone is and I have only found bits and pieces of the information I am looking for. Thanks for all the help

Bettertoday55.... Unsulphured molasses is availabe at most grocery stores right next to the pancake syrup. You can use Honey or Pancake Syrup (which is basically corn syrup with coloring/flavoring) also.
.
If you mix molasses at the rate of one ounce to one gallon of unchlorinated water the NPK averages about 5-1-3 This can be used in between fertilizing weeks, to keep the flora (good bacteria & fungi) in the soil alive & well; which will aid in overall plant health. I would not use it as a stand alone fertilizer, because it's weak in the Phosphorus area.
.
Honey when mixed at the rate of one ounce to one gallon of unchlorinated water, makes an NPK of 2-1-1 to 3-2-2 depending on the source. I don't know the value of corn syrup (pancake syrup). But I would assume, it's about in the range of honey, maybe even less.
.
Give the thread "Making Tea is EZ" a read, it will provide you with lots of info on other things you can use (cheaply) that are good sources of NPK. With any of them add more or less - to adjust the NPK upwards or downwards. Combine different ingredients for custom NPK's, it is pretty easy. Lots of people combine manures & molasses to make custom blends.
.
Hope this helps...
