1 gallon of pot space for 1 foot of plant good rule to go by. Lowes has the 3 1/2 gallons witch is perfect I grow mine to 4 1/2 foot some times not on purpose but just giving you idea.. Also if you use hydro nutes for flowering roots wont need as much room and wont act crazy. 3 1/2 gallon is best pot for pot

From a lot of reading the root area should be around 5 Gal per plant. Yea a 5 Gal bucket doesn't get to be 5 Gal, but it doesn't have other plants roots to deal with and keeping around that 5 mark keeps the ferts more manageable as more plants take up what they need at differing amounts and water too.

Make sure the O2 for the roots match the water amount, pot size, and plants.

The pot size should be big enough to hold the plant stable when all that weight gets packed on... so like a 5" net pot with clay should work well, others go down to 3.5" Filthy Fletch did a great write up on a 6 spot DWC...

yea i just made a new hydro system out of a 5 gal. rubbermaid toughneck i put togeather. it has six slots for 3 inch net cups will that work for there whole "life" or will they need bigger. im not looking for jumbo plants just somthing small and manageable for a begginer in his experimentaion stage.

in all honesty, i'd use the biggest pot that space allows for.
