Drying/Curing question

this is a best guess, but you may not get a nice cure odor
after a week, you should be getting something
i've not gotten the hay odor, but see the complaint fairly regular, you may have done nothing wrong, not every plant seems to yield great odor

part of the cure is the drying process. The slower the better, and allowing the buds to sweat and absorb moisture and continue drying will increase the flavor. With just a couple popcorn buds you really can't do much. As you saw, it was crispy dry after only a couple days. If they were harvested prematurely, they will generally always have a grassy/hay-like aroma IME, and bottom buds just don't recieve enough light to mature and drip with trichs nor are they solid enough to hold any moisture unless you have a lot or a small container or something.

wasn't clear just how much the OP had of popcorn, if it's small that probably won't get much odor/flavor
but i am doing a similar cure right now, a good handful of popcorn, let dried for 3/4 days, they have a pretty good curing odor
not as nice as the bigger buds, but was worth doing
but they didn't seem to dry out quite so much, everyone has different conditions

Once it goes Hay... it's Hay. Still get you high.

I dry and cure my stuff properly.
But, once in a while I get a strain that will come out smelling like Hay.

PD, its been as slow as possible, I hung them for couple days and tossed em in the jar. They were harvested at the same time as the rest of the plant; they just smell different than the tops... your explanation of how they mature less seems to be legit. They def did not receive enough light. And no, they are in the pint jar. Its not a small container.

Hell yeah you can still smoke it. At least you know what it is, and what's not on it like bugs or chemicals or w/e. It has taken too long for me to realize popcorn aint worth it. I have had problems with seeds growing on the bottom branches let alone buds, and it seems like every set of buds is exponentially smaller than the nodes above it. Just trim all that undergrowth in veg or early flowering and your plants will reward you.
