Hi, Been reading the forums for a while now. I got some bag seeds from my friend and have been trying to decide if I should put them in a cup of water or just put them in a wet towel. I\'ve been reading that I can do it both ways. I really don\'t want to mess up cause I only have 4 seeds. which way has the best success rate? Thanks

I use the paper towel method, but them in a zip lock bag, then put them in a dark, warm cabinet and i haven't had a problem yet.

Its really hard to determine an exact success rate because there are very few proven statistics, just forums like this where people verbally(digitally) pass info and experiences.

do you close the zip lock bag or keep it open?

Take some paper towels, fold them over several times, wet them, then fold the towels over the seeds. Put the towel on a plate and place it on a warm surface, like your computer monitor. Keep the towel wet ... not sopping, just wet. Check the seeds every day and look for a white "tail" to come out of the seeds. When that tail is about 1/4 inch long, then transplant it into your medium tail DOWN. Good luck ...

Thank you guys for the input. Is it ok to just use plain tap water? I also plan on just using some regular potting soil. Should I plant the sprout in a small pot and then keep transplanting to a bigger pot, or is it ok to just plant in a 3 gal pot from the get go?

1. You're welcome.

2. Plain tap water is OK. RO water is better. If you have just a couple of plants, go to the store and buy bottled "Purified" water.

3. There are some real good soil mixes that you can find by using the search engine provided by this site.

4. Usually, seedlings are started in smaller pots, then transplanted. You CAN start in a larger pot if you want.

Tap water is fine if you PH it. PH is very important. The PH of your water should be between 5.5 and 6.5

I would suggest going to the pet store and buy a PH testing kit. You will find them in the aquarium section for like 10 bucks. It also includes ph up and down to adjust the water.

Use that ph tester to test the ph of your tap water, then adjust it accordingly.
