pot up to final pot, imo. better roots; stronger plant
I have 6 seedlings, been up about a week and a half. I was wondering about potting on to bigger pots. They're in 3 inch pots at the minute. Can you put them directly into their final big pot or is it better to go through a couple of pots getting bigger each time?
For the final big pot I was thinking about the buckets you get in hardware stores?

That's 13.6 litres. Is that big enough?

3"............6".............10".................. .5gal
i don't always do the 10" if the 10" pots are busy. if you go right to a large pot, your plant(s) will spend a lot of time growing roots, without much above-ground growth. it will be harder to manage water/moisture in the large container/small plant situation.

True enough.
Horror story: my first outdoor grow, I threw beans into 5 gallon pots. Pathetic scrawny little plants. Combine that with the fact I used a slow release fertilizer AND I sprayed them with some hardcore chemical insecticide. In short, I flat out murdered them. Mercy killing, I suppose.. considering how awful they were. I still cringe when I think of it. lol
Live and learn.
You can lead a horticulture but you can't make her think.
i just saw your second question..............
3 gallons is enough for small plants. 5 gal for biggies. imo
