    Question Newbie lighting/reflector question.

hey rollitup, brand new blood in this game so please be patient ..

now, i haven't personally grown before, but i have known ppl who have grown I've been researching a shit load on everything i could find for a month or two now, and i think i've got a pretty decent base of knowledge for a beginner.

i'm gonna be heading off to a new apartment probably around mid-april, and i figure i might as well get some of the supplies i'll need while money is still in my pockets.. I do need it moderately stealthy, but nothing too excessive--im thinking just converting a part/all of my bedroom closet into a cabinet...my main concern is the smell and the noise of the fans and other equipment being heard by family and friends visiting.

right now, i'm just trying to get an approximate on the kind of lighting and ventilation i'm going to need

so, My first question is this--since its in a closet it's probably going to be say 2 feet minimum deep, and probably around 4 or 5 feet long. is there any way to get a cool tube reflector that would give this footprint with a 400 or 600 watt hps? or would say 2x250watt hps lights in 2 separate reflector/cool tube be better?

I would say two 250w bulbs would be the best coverage. If you plan on using the whole space to veg then flower your plants then that's what I would do. A 400w isn't going to cover the width (4-5'). You could make a box on one side to keep a mom in and then use just a 400w to light the other 3-4' of flower/veg. Then you could just put a shelf on top and make that your clone station. Just make sure the flower part is light sealed so when it is dark cycle no light gets in. If not, then run with two 250w in small air cooled or cool tube reflectors. Vent the air into the ceiling or somewhere else out of the grow area. You can add a small carbon filter on the intake side of your light/cooltube and pull air out of the grow room and throught the hoods and then exhaust it. This way you will be creating negative pressure in the room and air will only come in throught the cracks and intakes. Then you scrub the air and filter it into the ceiling or somewhere else.

    Good luck.

thanks for the reply! yea i think it'd be beneficial for myself to have a mother plant for the first while--at least till i get a semi-reliable method of cloning lol. i think i'll probably be doing a scrog grow (if not the first then the second more than likely). so if i had a flower and veg area separated and on top of each other i think that would utilize my space a lot better and i'll just train them low early in veg. i'll get my cloning station somewhere beside it.

whats the difference in the application of a cool tube vs a air cooled hood? i imagine the cool tube is mainly for keeping temps down and not so much reflective quality, and the hood is the opposite?

would it be beneficial for myself to have ducting running air over the light in the cool tube/hood and out into the wall to disperse heat, then have a separate ventilation system for air circulation and scrubbing the air with a carbon filter?

    Thanks again!

Cooltubes are great for vertical lighting or small grow cabinets where heat is an issue. With 250w lights in that space I would just get air cooled reflectors. You won't need anything fancy; just a simple 6" reflector. Definitely use ducting and a fan to PULL air through your hoods and then exhaust it out of the grow area. You can put a carbon filter on the intake side of the first hood and that will scrub the air you are exhausting.
