Default designing indoor stealth grow setup. please help

alright i'm planning my first grow now. i've been reading so damn much that i'm getting frustrated and need to get hands on experience.

my setup is going to go in my garage and under my workbench i will be building all this and needs to be stealth since i will only be growing for myself and the wife doesn't care that i smoke just wouldn't be down for this hobby.

I know i am going to get told to search for these topics but i haven't found straight answers and have read so many different ones.

Goal: stealth 1-2 plant setup, short bushy plants, area will only be 3 feet tall.

looking into CFLs for veg then 250 or 400w HPS for flowering. the best cfls i saw at Lowes were 65w 3900 lumens. would two of these be good enough to veg 3 plants. (hope to get at least one female) grow space will be 100% covered in reflective material with aluminum hood above lighting to reflect down.

so i guess i need your input on lighting, nutes and what way is best to make the plant as short and bushy as possible.

    i will be using soil.

oh and also can i vent from the floor? this would help make it even more stealth. haven't seen any setups like that though so thought i better ask. there will be a fan in there to help with cooling and the garage will be 55-60* over winter so the lights should get the box up to around 75*

blah i'm never gunna stop with the questions. lets go from there. I've noticed everyone is really helpful on this site and i'm sure i'll be happy with the respones.

First I would talk to my wife and explain to her that it will save us money with less risk than buying it and that NO ONE will ever know. Then with a space that small I would go with T-5's and you won't have to worry about venting the heat.

ok as for lights... 3 ft vertical will not be enough space for an hps... your suposed to keep plants a foot away from them ... then you have pots and actual hood space... so your actual area that you could use for the plant would be like a foot... mabe... so either think of another spot. or go all out cfls. .... you can veg 3 plants with 65 watt cfls and to keep em bushy try to keep the lights as close as possible(without burning) so they dont streach for light. you might wanna keep em in small-medium pots to reduce how far there roots can go... there for restricting there size. and you could use tekniques like topping LST SCRoG or just Sog continuosly mabe mixed with one of those.

    topping and lst.

please explain. pretty sure i know topping is just cutting the top set of leaves off after like the 5th node? i've heard some do it earlier than that.. as for LST is the tieing them down? i need to find a picture of this.

maybe veg with 2 of these 65w CFLs then add 1 or 2 more for flowering?

Mclovin. thanks for the advise but she wouldn't go for it. and i know its "wrong" to do it behind her back. but it'll be fine.
as for the T5s i've thought about them but have heard mixed reviews. do you use them?

    thanks for the quick replies

seems like you got a plan... search lst and u will find pics of it its pretty basic. just tie it so it bends sideways ish as for the cfls.. sounds like it would work some people might say thats not enough to flower... i wouldent rele know.

as for the whole "wrong" thing . its not wrong.. its just not right glass is half full

honestly once your started she prolly wont care... if you tell her befor you start she can position herself strongly against it. in that case your fucked... but if you start.. then show her/she finds out later. she might be against it alittle but she will be caught offguard and will not have time to form a strong opinion either way so just ease into it... wait a few weeks then bring it up

well you can use any lights you like... there are some more efficent for flowering but any lights can be used.... plants tend to use more blue spectrum light woll in vegitative growth... which can come from Mh or cool CFL's or specific LED lights.... as for flowering. plants tend to use more light from the red spectrum for bud production. so MH and cool cfls would not work well.... instead HPS has more Red spectrum so hps is good for flowering.... also Warm white CFLs i think in the 27k range should be good for flowering . along with specific LED Lights (diffrent color then ones for VEG)

as for amount of light plants need. try to keep your lumens between 5000 and 10,000 per plant 5k = minimum and 10k = optimal... the closer you get to 10k the better your plants should turn out... each bulb should have a spectrum rating... either cool or warm light 65k or 27k and each bulb should have a lumen rating. hps systems are like 30,000+ which is why people prefer them for flowering but you can use cfls. smaller cfls will have around 2000 and larger ones will have a good deal more

lmk if you have any questions, im not to smart on lighting but someone explained this all to me several times... unfortunatly they used big words and alot of advanced information but i picked up the general jist of how lighting works

I use a 400 watt hps and a few cfls for added blue spectrum. Its hot man I need to get a vented hood for it. I almost went for the T-5's but the don't have the penetrating power that the hps has & I have about 8ft of vertical I can let them get a little tall. If I really had a tight space I would go with the T-5 lots of light with low heat so you can get you planets pretty close and you can put in both blue & red spectrum at the same time. There are a few cats that use them on here and absolutely love them. Tight space low heat means a taller plant and more yield. That's my take but I'm a newbie at this myself.

    alright heres my thoughts

deciding to build a veg and a grow room..

should i just use the (2) 65w 3800lumen CFLs (warm color temp, 5500 i believe) i have now and maybe add two more 26w CFLs to this for the veg. and mother when i get to that point

then i'm thinking a 4 tube 4' T5 floro setup with 2 of each color temp which would equal 20,000 lumens for the flowering box. (close to HPS but with ability to get close to plants.)

each box will be covered in reflective material so will i need to mount any lights on the sides?

Hey - take a look at my pics in my gallery and in my stealth journal. I just recently made an expansion to double my space, but grew for nearly 5 years under a workbench in my basement, a SCROG - sounds very similar to your situation.

Don't know what to say about the spouse. I kept my hidden for a while, and she was pissed when she found out. Stopped for a while but didn't tell her immediately when I restarted. Pissed at that as well - doh.

Our latest deal - she knows I am growing, but it's mostly a don't ask don't tell. I keep it hidden and she can pretend not to know.
