Organic Traditions Garden Lime

I picked some of this up a few weeks ago from Home Depot. I am skeptical that the pellets are not small enough to have an immediate effect on my soil. I am getting ready to start my second grow in Sunshine Pro Mix #1. I ran some ph 7 water through the soil and it came out at an even 6. I would like to add lime to buffer it before I get started.

Will this stuff work? Can I crush it up to make it work better? Should I buy something else?

It looks like this stuff is suppose to dissolve in water. I will give it a try tonight. If not I will try grinding it somehow (don't have a coffee grinder).

That should work IMO. I've heard some people using a similar product and they like to add it to the soil then condition it by wetting it down for a few months before they grow. I guess it takes awhile for the lime "balls" to break down. I use a product call prilled dolomite but it's probably the same thing. I use about a 1/2 cup to 3-4 gal of soil. Don't know if I'm doing it right but my ph stays around 6.5 to the end. You can also get powder lime but I haven't seen it anywhere.

Prilled lime is exactly what you want. From what I read it is a powdered lime that is palletized but breaks down in water in a couple of hours. If I can't smash this stuff up I will try to find some.

Picked up a 40 or 50 lb bag of Pulverized Lime. Stuff is heavy. Should last forever. Only $5.99. Anyone have a good recommendation for how many tablespoons per gallon of soil? I am going to start with a 1/2 teaspoon in the party cup that I was testing with last night and see what happens. Will update soon...

Looks like the Pulverized Lime does not do to much immediately to raise PH. I added about a tablespoon by the time I was done. I was able to get the ph up to 6.2 from 5.9. I also have hydrated lime. Tomorrow I will put a 1/4 teaspoon in and test. I think that is the ticket to give the pro mix a bump up to 6.5. Then the dolomite lime will act as a buffer for the long haul. Once I get a stable mixture of dolomite and hydrated lime I will try to do it to a larger quantity. My target is 6.5 in the soil.
