damn man, well you need to start being more energy efficient with the rest of your house. Turn off computers at night, tvs, lights ( exept hps ), everything man. Also a good idea, is to go out and buy a box of cfls, and replace them with your house lights. Use a low watt, and this should save you a good amount of money.

Grow on buddy = )

something to consider - when you go over your month ALOOTED amount of energy use, the price begins to rise.... Maybe if you only used the 400 watt LIGHT, it would have only increased your bill y 30-40 dollars.. but since you went over your cities "alloted amount of energy usage" they charge you double.

You should consider lowering your fridge temp, and unplug all appliances that are not being used...

Just being smart around the house, I reduced my electric bill by $100 a month.. c

i replaced like 20 bulbs in my household fixtures with cfls, and have been religious about turning lights and appliances off when not needed... i've been getting more efficient as i go, and so far, it's been about $25 extra per month...
400 w mh (multi-spec bulb), lumatek digital ballast, co2 boost pump, and fan. after starting 12/12, have added an ac unit and a dehumidifier.
many plugged-in appliances still draw some electricity when off, like at
stereos, so you might want to get some of that stuff organized on power strips, so you can conveniently pull one plug. good luck!!

I noticed a big spike in my bill just as you have. I told my girlfriend that from now on we are turning off all lights unless they're being used. We have lights on in the house all the time. Also, I went from a 24/0 cycle to 18/6 with timers. That will cut down on it too. It's amazing to see how much energy is wasted once you start cutting down.
