hey, i havnt got anything to test the ph of my water but read somewhere that rainwater is ph 5.5 - 6 but may have some pollutents in it. I live in a very rural area by the sea so im pretty sure the rainwater wouldnt be to bad here
Anyway my question is, would collected rainwater run through a brita filter be better for my plants than plain old tap water? |

it might be , depends on which filter you have , i know they have diff levels of filtration now so im not sure which you have but also be careful rain water can contain lots of pollution from smog etc, u say u live in a rural area but that rain cloud could have came from anywhere, but if u filter it than i dont see y it shouldnt be ok , tap water has already been filtered once but it will contain chlorine most likely , so id say either once filtered will be good

If you leave the water container open all the chlorine will evaporate after 24-48 hrs and the water will be able to oxygenate,24-48 hrs depending on the size of your container, then filter it and you will have good filtered chlorine free water from the tap.

I use rain water as much as I can, I have a 55 gal plastic barrel with the down spout in it to collect it every time it rains. Have had no problem with it. Just that it's been a little drry here this year but I think rain water is the best. I have one plant out doors and two clones from it inside. They get nothing but rain water and some nuits

I like the idea of using rainwater but how do you keep bugs, germs and shit from entering the water barrel.
Also how can you be sure that the water has not been contaminated ?

My rainwater tests at 7.2 so it depends on where you live I guess....I have noticed that run off from gutters that have a few leaves produces water with PH of 6.8...I use 5 gal buckets to collect...then transfer to gallon jugs with a cheese cloth filter under funnel..it filters whatever particles are remaining..the girls love it. If I need/want to lower further I add 2-3 granules per gallon of sodium bisulfate...it works great but I ONLY apply in granules
