Yeah it's hard to see from the pics but I'm thinking it's your growth tip that died/is deformed. Sometimes genetics or heat can cause the growing tip to die. This has happened to a few of my plants, and then they respond like being topped. One of my plants is genetically very weird and splitting into new growth tips at every node. It's turning into a weed shrub! lol
