Hi to all as this is my first post, just wish it concerned a happier subject matter!! I am starting my first grow and have just started to germinate my seeds ( white rhino - GH ). After soaking the seeds overnight I placed them in the fold of a tissue , watered the tissue and then laid it over a cooking grate ( for drainage ) on a dinner plate and placed it in my airing cupboard as the house temp is around 67f, where as the top temp in the airing cupboard is 79f.

I Checked the tissue before I went to bed and it was still nice and moist but when I woke up it was crispy dry!! The maximum time it could have been in that dry state is approximately 9hrs. Have I ruined my seeds ?? or is it not as bad as it seems ??

I have now placed the plate in my bedroom drawer with a small heater in the room - temp is around 71.6f.

I would keep it around for a while but it is possible that you killed it...

If it hasn't sprouted at all yet, and only been a day, give or take a few hours, it should be fine. Your best bet is to put the tissue in a plastic baggies overnight to keep it from drying out like that. Or even better, screw that wet paper towel crap and just drop them in some soil. Chances are, if it didn't start to sprout, then dry out like that afterwards, you should be just fine.

if the little white root has already come out and turned black or brown or shriveled up, then you killed it. If not, you should be fine.

phew!! thanks for the responses fella's. It has only been a day in the paper towel and the white root is yet to show, so hopefully i should be all right. The paper towel is now in my bedroom drawer on a grate, on a plate ( temp 76f ) - but it is not covered by another plate or a plastic bag as I thought that in order for the seeds to germinate they need to breathe.

Water contains air especially when in a wet paper towel. They need to be hydrated and warm and have a decent PH.

cool - i will probably put a bowl or a plate over it - i think my tap water ph is 7.2

Yep, I second that. I seal mine in their damp napkins, inside a small tupperware bowl. Better that, because if they crack open and dry out like that, they will die.

7.2 is alright, but 6.5-6.7 would be better probably.

What are you planting in?

I always use distilled with a little h202(Hydrogen peroxide) 3%
