so before i actually got my hands on some nice beans, i remember people were always giving me white little seeds, that usually would sprout up very crappy pllants. now that i have made my own seeds, ive noticed that they usually dont sprout up before they are brown. is there some kind of master's trick here im unaware of?

Most of the higher quality bag seeds that I've found over the years were very small and almost black. I've never produced my own seeds but I would imagine that those seeds will probably get darker. I've always thought the really light colored ones to be of lesser quality, but I think it depends on the strain. So, I'm sure somebody can help you out more than me.

I started with bag seed, but I couldn't get any white ones to start. The brown ones have almost all sprouted, but there is normally a thin layer that protects the seed, I normally have to roll the seed in my fingers until the thin layer comes off. I have had good luck with them, Just finished my first grow, had males, but the one female did great and I had a crappy setup at first(vegged in aerogarden so didn't get tall) now I have a tent and some small hps's etc and still managed 3oz 9 grams from one 16 inch tall plant and the buds are super chronic.
I think seeds color can depend on strain, the smaller ones never worked out for me, I have some bought seeds and they are about double the size of the ones I sprouted, but they haven't grown any better.

the white seeds are imature, the dark seeds are mature.

there are various shades in each seed veriety.

little white seeds result from bud that got pollenized only 1 or 2 weeks before harvest.

theres light green, that looks almost white, but even those are often too young to sprout.

if you got a small white seed to sprout its fairly maraculus.

well back in the day all of those little white seeds used to sprout. i would put them in a cup for 12 hours then plant them and most of em would come right up

The lighter colored seeds you describe are generally immature and will not germinate, however if you are peeling off a thin layer over the shell of the seed that is most likely the Calyx covering that has not fallen off. At any rate, immature seeds even if they do sprout generally produce weaker, sickly plants.
