the best time to top a plant is after they have gotten their first fan leaves. You cut the new shoot that is growing on the top between the new fan leaves. This will cas your plants to have two top colas insead of one. You can also top the new shoots that have split and will cause it two grow two more shoots, though I would only do this three times as 4 top colas is enough.

I've tried the experiment of topping, and not topping to see how it affects yield. Even though you'll get more colas from topping, they won't be as large as the one main cola you'll get from not topping. Growing the same strains, I seem to get a larger yield if I don't top.

Colas are the central stem that has the buds. The shoots.

Cut the top of your plant off, leaving 1/4 inch of "stem" to stick out the top above the next lowest set of branches: as you can see on my scientific text example...

I always top one plant and leave the other of a particular strain that I'm growing. I like to top around the 3rd week of veg. Recently topping super skunk, I noticed 5 or 6 colas that have great volume and am very happy. Certain strains benefit from this practice and vice versa.

thanx guy but i thought topping is when you ti rope on the top and the bottom and the stem an leaf to stunt the growth i didnt know about cutting and do u need to keep the light close for it wont get to big

Topping is an excellent way to control height. As this is usually not a problem for me, I generally do not top my plants. IMO, although topping produces more colas, I think that the plant slows down its growth rate a little in reaction to trauma? It seems that the untopped plants, in a side by side comparison do not appear to slow down and therefore produce slightly fatter buds overall.(if harvested at the same time)
This has been my observation over the years, but I've never kept records or weighed anything to make certain....just a hunch!
