I was watching a video and they mentioned that if you want to get the most bud out of your plant then you should work on the roots. Any of you fellas know how true this is??? I also heard that roots grow the most when the lights are off but i keep my lights on 24hrs. anyone have any advice????

Yes More roots = more bud.... As long as those roots have enough room to grow, once they get root bound all bets are off.... Moral of the story here, don't be afraid to replant into ever larger pots if your growing in soil....
Put your plants on an 18/6 veg cycle.
